Ghana signed a bilateral debt restructuring agreement with the United Kingdom covering about $256 million, Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson said on Wednesday (24 September)
This marks the third such deal under the country’s ongoing debt overhaul.
The agreement, signed with UK’s Trade Commissioner for Africa, John Humphrey, follows similar pacts with France and the Export-Import Bank of China.
Ghana, which defaulted on most of its external debt in late 2022, has been restructuring obligations to restore fiscal stability and secure financing for stalled infrastructure.
Forson said Ghana was also working with UK Export Finance (UKEF) to reinstate support for key projects, including the Bolgatanga–Bawku–Pulimakom road, the modernisation of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi, the Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange Phase II, the first phase of the Tema–Aflao road, and the redevelopment of Kumasi Central Market.
Also present at the signing were UK High Commissioner to Ghana Christian Rogg, Finance Ministry Chief Director Patrick Nomo and other officials.
“This milestone reflects the deepening of our partnership with the United Kingdom,” Forson wrote in a Facebook post.
