2024 CHAN Draw: Kenya, Senegal face tough challenges

Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda discover their group stages for the 2025 tournament, with defending champions Senegal set for a showdown against Congo, Nigeria, and Sudan

The draw for the 2024 TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) has set the stage for what promises to be a thrilling tournament, with fierce encounters lined up for the competition, set to take place in East Africa in August 2025.

Held on Wednesday (15 January) at Nairobi’s Kenyatta International Convention Centre, the draw saw host nation Kenya, alongside Tanzania and Uganda, discover their opponents for the tournament.

As hosts, Kenya were seeded into Group A and will face off against two-time champions Morocco, alongside DR Congo, Angola, and Zambia.

This group is stacked with past champions and high-calibre teams, ensuring fans are in for an exciting spectacle.

In Group B, Tanzania, also seeded as hosts, will battle Madagascar, Mauritania, Burkina Faso, and the Central African Republic.

Meanwhile, Group C, which features Uganda as hosts, presents a bit of an unknown, as they will play against Niger, Guinea, and two yet-to-be-decided teams from the qualification rounds, labelled as Qualifier 1 and Qualifier 2.

Defending champions Senegal, top seeds in Group D, have been drawn with Congo, Sudan, and Nigeria, promising an intense competition within this four-team pool.

However, two spots in the tournament are still up for grabs, with Algeria, Comoros, Gambia, Malawi, Egypt, South Africa, and Gabon all set to compete in a qualification campaign to fill the remaining slots for Qualifier 1 and Qualifier 2.

This year’s edition will be the first time the TotalEnergies CHAN heads to East Africa since Rwanda hosted the tournament in 2016.

The competition, unique to Africa, features only players who compete in their domestic leagues, highlighting the continent’s homegrown football talent.

The tournament’s draw ceremony featured football legends from the region, with Uganda’s Hassan Wasswa, Tanzania’s Mrisho Ngasa, and Kenya’s McDonald Mariga adding star power to the event.

The evening was a celebration of African football, marking another significant milestone in the CHAN’s storied history.

With seven editions behind it, the TotalEnergies CHAN continues to shine a spotlight on the best local talent as teams from across the continent prepare for the fierce competition ahead.
