1D1F: Akufo-Addo commissions GHC10 million yam and cassava processing factory in Oti

With support from Ghana EXIM Bank to the tune of GHC10 million, the facility will process yam into frozen chips and yam balls, under the brand name CH Foods

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Thursday 9 September 2021 commissioned CH Global Ltd, a cassava and yam processing factory operating under the government’s One District, One Factory (1D1F) initiative and located in Addo Nkwanta, in the Krachi East District of the Oti Region.

With support from Ghana EXIM Bank to the tune of GHC10 million, the facility will process yam into frozen chips and yam balls under the brand name CH Foods. The operation will take advantage of raw materials available in the catchment area.

It is estimated that the first phase of the project will process 120 tubers of yam per hour on average, which will produce 60 bags of processed frozen yam chips and yam balls. The factory will require 216,000 tubers of yam a year to run at full capacity.

Job opportunities

The implementation of phase two of the project, which is scheduled to start in 2022, will introduce a cassava processing line producing cassava fries and snacks, with a capacity to process 700 metric tonnes of cassava ayear.

The business promoters told President Akufo-Addo that over 250 people will be employed by the factory under phase one. The phase two development will also create a significant number of direct and indirect employment opportunities for young people in and around the district.

The president concluded his remarks by commending the local promoters and traditional authorities for their unflinching support for the project, as well as Ghana EXIM Bank for providing the loan facility to establish the state-of-the-art factory, sited at Addo Nkwanta in the Krachi East District of the Oti Region.

As of September 2021, 278 projects are at various stages of implementation across the country under the 1D1F initiative. Out of this number, 104 are already in operation, 150 are under construction, and the remaining 24 are at the mobilisation stage.

One hundred and sixty-five out of the 278 projects – that is, 60% of the factories – are new projects; the remaining 113 are existing projects which are being supported.

Rationale for 1D1F

Unemployment being one of the biggest challenges confronting the nation, the 1D1F initiative seeks to address the challenge of youth unemployment, as well as underdevelopment in peri-urban and rural communities, by attracting private sector investment into development activities being undertaken by these communities.

The One District, One Factory programme is designed to transform Ghana’s industrial landscape by building the capacity of local enterprises to produce high-quality products for both the local and foreign markets.

The establishment of CH Global in Addo Nkwanta signals the government’s commitment to support the private sector through the 1D1F initiative.
