Thirteen people have died in a head-on collision between a fuel tanker and a passenger minibus on Ghana’s busy Accra-Kumasi highway, authorities have confirmed.
The crash occurred at Amanase, near Suhum, in the Eastern Region, during the early hours of Tuesday.
Police say the fuel tanker, with registration number GR 1300-16, veered into the path of an oncoming Benz Sprinter minibus, registered GW 6510-23, after the driver is believed to have dozed off behind the wheel.
The collision claimed the lives of 13 people — 10 men and three women — while several others sustained injuries, according to the Suhum Municipal Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service, ADO1 Akonnor Opare Ohene Daniel.
One of the survivors, speaking to local media, recalled waking up to find the vehicle off the road and severely damaged.
Emergency services from the Ghana National Fire Service and Police responded swiftly to the incident, helping to rescue survivors and manage traffic congestion along the stretch.
