12-year-old girl invents solar-powered blanket to help save thousands of homeless lives
Rebecca Young’s solar-powered heated blanket could transform how cities support people experiencing homelessness

Rebecca Young, a 12-year-old student from Glasgow, has stunned the world with a breakthrough invention aimed at tackling homelessness. What began as a simple school project has evolved into a potentially life-saving innovation: a solar-powered heated blanket designed specifically to help people experiencing homelessness stay warm.

Rebecca’s blanket operates without needing a direct power connection. Instead, it uses copper wires, solar panels, and a battery system to generate and store heat efficiently. This makes it completely portable and eco-friendly, ideal for individuals without stable shelter or access to electricity.

What makes Rebecca’s invention even more impressive is her attention to practical safety. With guidance and support from Thales, an international engineering company, she improved the design by adding waterproof and flame-resistant materials. Additionally, the blanket incorporates a smart temperature control system, ensuring it conserves energy by automatically regulating heat when it’s not needed.
Experts believe her invention could make a real difference, especially in cities grappling with homelessness during harsh winters. Rebecca’s work not only highlights the power of young minds to drive change but also offers a glimpse into how renewable energy technologies can be adapted to meet urgent humanitarian needs.
Her story is inspiring a new conversation around youth innovation, green technology, and social entrepreneurship—proving that no one is too young to create solutions that save lives.
