The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has approved 11 companies to participate in its newly established virtual asset and fintech regulatory sandbox under the Virtual Asset Service Providers Act, 2025.
The 12-month sandbox will allow firms to test digital financial products in a controlled regulatory environment, enabling the SEC to assess risks and refine licensing rules for the sector.
Companies whose products meet regulatory standards within the first six months may qualify for full licences, while others can continue testing for the remainder of the period.
Among the admitted firms are Africoin, Blu Penguin, GoldBod, HanyPay, Hyro Exchange GH Ltd, HSB Global, KoinKoin, Whitebit, Vaulta, XChain, and BSystem Ltd.
GoldBod, the Ghana Gold Board, will pilot gold-backed tokenisation through a special purpose vehicle, handling gold custody, verification, and vaulting while reporting to the SEC.
Deputy Director-General for Finance at the SEC, Mensah Thompson, said the initiative aims to guide future regulation for gold-backed securities and tokenised gold assets in Ghana’s capital market.
The sandbox is part of Ghana’s broader push to integrate digital finance innovation with strong regulatory oversight, balancing growth and investor protection.
