PURC fines ECG GHC36,000 for various infractions

The Public Utility and Regulatory Commission (PURC) has also fined the board of directors of ECG about GHC5.8 million for power cut violations

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has been fined GHC36,000 for failing to submit all bank and investment accounts it currently operates to the Public Utility and Regulatory Commission (PURC).

It comes after ECG failed to honour requests for data by the PURC on three consecutive occasions.

The data requested relates to the tariff revenue allocation under the Cash Waterfall Mechanism (CWM), the provision of regulatory audit data and the submission of information related to operational matters, as well as the provision of other regulatory audit data.

The PURC also fined the board of directors of ECG about GHC5.8 million for power cut violations.

Speaking to Kwaku Nhyira-Addo on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Tuesday (16 April), the director of research and corporate affairs of PURC, Eric Obutey said ECG has up to the end of April to pay the fine.

“We requested certain documentation in our last order that we issued on 18 March 2024 and they responded by providing some data. We analysed that data and the findings are what we have actually put in another order for them to respond.

“We requested things on Cash Water Fall Mechanism, data on outages, on the transformers, on their bank statement, so they provided some information and the analyses of that is what culminated in this order.”

“The fine in the case of the GHC5.8 million imposed on the board members who were at post from 1 January to 18 March has to do with some outages, the data they submitted indicated that they had 165 outages, per the regulations of the PURC if you are going to do maintenance you give the consumer three days notice…,” Obutey said.
