Otto Addo to strengthen squad for crucial World Cup qualifiers

The coach of the Black Stars said he will be monitoring the players in the upcoming months and will make the right conclusions for the upcoming matches in June

Following a lacklustre 2-2 draw against Uganda in a friendly on Tuesday (26 March), Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has set his sights on strengthening Ghana’s squad ahead of the team’s vital 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Mali and the Central African Republic in June.

Speaking after the match at the Stade de Marrakech in Morocco, Addo acknowledged the need for improvement and the importance of a stronger squad.

“We will be monitoring the players in the upcoming months and we will make the right conclusions for our upcoming matches in June,” Addo said.

“We have to improve in our defensive positioning, closing gaps, recognising situations, and taking the right decisions defensively.”

The coach pinpointed the absence of key players as a factor and expressed hope for their return. “We hope that key players from this team will come back to have a strong squad in June and then we attack again,” he stated.

“When these seven, eight, nine men who weren’t there today are back, you could have a stronger squad, and this stronger squad have a big, big task to beat Mali and Central African Republic.”

Addo did not shy away from criticising his team’s performance against Uganda. “There were too many things I saw today which I didn’t like,” he admitted.

“Counter pressing, closing the gaps in the back, allowing chances for the opponents—we had like one chance. I think this is even too much but there were three, four chances; we also had our chances but normally I see us higher than Uganda and we have to do much, much better.”

Ghana will face Mali away on 3 June before returning home to take on the Central African Republic on 10th June.
