Lothar Matthäus’ take over has given us new outlook, says CEO of Accra Lions

The ballon d'Or winner Matthäus became a co-owner of the club together with former Black Stars player Frank Acheampong in May 2023

Accra Lions CEO Nana Obiri Yeboah says the takeover by German football legend Lothar Matthäus has given the club a new outlook for the European market.

The ballon d’Or winner Matthäus became a co-owner of the club together with Former Black Stars player Frank Acheampong and Oliver König, a former German player agent, in May 2023. The move was to make the club a pipeline to European clubs.

“With Lothar, there is another spice to the whole arrangement, and it gives you a connection to other clubs across the globe,” said Accra Lions CEO, Nana Obiri Yeboah.

“We are doing things behind the scenes, and players are getting to move out and new ones are coming in. The culture of Accra Lions is when people step out, others step in  and there is no fear.”

“We want to capitalise on this all-important personality of Lothar and see how we can push players to a certain standard to the benefit of the players individually as they continue their careers outside and also to the national teams and the brand Accra Lions.”

Accra Lions were ninth on the Ghana Premier League table when the new partnership was announced in the 2023/23 season.

They are currently third on the league table with six games to go, after a historic one-nil win over city rivals Hearts of Oak on Thursday (2 May).

Accra Lions will host fourth-placed Aduana FC at the Accra Sports Stadium in their next encounter.
