IOC member William Blick praises Ghana for successful hosting of African Games

Ghana hosted the multi-sport event for the first time with nine venues with over 5000 athletes competing in 29 sporting disciplines for the first time in the African Games- eight served as an Olympic Qualifier.

A member of the International Olympics Committee (IOC), Williams Blick, has praised Ghana for organising a successful 13th African Games.

Ghana hosted the multi-sport event for the first time with nine venues including a US$145 million Borteyman sports complex with over 5000 athletes competing in 29 sporting disciplines for the first time in the African Games- eight served as an Olympic Qualifier.

Though the games did not have a smooth start, the event finished on a high note with a spectacular closing ceremony.

Blick, speaking at the final press briefing on Monday (25 March), also praised the Ministry of Youth and Sports for deciding to host the African Games despite financial constraints.

“What Ghana has done as a country is really extremely commendable,” said the IOC member.

“Hosting of these games in this difficult time is really something that has been done in an excellent way.”

“We know that hosting has been difficult; there have been limited finances but the government of Ghana and the leadership of the president insisted that these games must take place,” Blick said.

“We are aware that there are some countries that have pulled out in the past for hosting games like Austria for the Commonwealth Games, South Africa for the Commonwealth Games and others but Ghana stuck there and produced games which have been commendable,” he added.

Blick also added he witnessed praise from countries such as Namibia and Nigeria who spoke highly of the world -class facilities made available for the African Games.

“These are true world-class facilities in Ghana and this is commendable,” he added.

“Very few African countries have these types of facilities and this is a bonus for the development of sports in Ghana and hosting of future international events.”

“These games were incident free, to host the big games without any incident is a big plus to this country to the LOC in charge of security,” Blick said.
