Hundreds of Jamestown residents rended homeless after fire outbreak

Hundreds of people in Jamestown in Accra have been rendered homeless after fire destroyed some 500 wooden structures in the area

A fire outbreak has destroyed almost 500 wooden structures, leaving hundreds of Jamestown residents homeless.

The fire, which happened on Tuesday (9 April) is said to have rapidly spread through the entire area due to the presence of highly inflammable materials and substances.

Speaking toĀ Asaase News, the assistant divisional officer of the public relations department at theĀ Ghana National Fire Service, Alex King Nartey said there were no casualties.

“We were informed of a fire at Jamestown and it was just opposite our training school. So at that moment, our team at our regional headquarters atĀ Korle BuĀ were fighting a fire at the OPD of Korle Bu Hospital so they quickly had to rush to Jamestown.”

According to him, the team upon arrival had to call for reinforcement due to the severity of the fire.

“Upon arrival, we realised the fire was well alive and spreading so we had to call for reinforcement from other stations to compliment our effort. So we were able to keep the fire from spreading though we had about 500 wooden structures burnt.”
