Greater Accra records lowest prevalence of malaria in Ghana, says GHS

This year, the world celebrates World Malaria Day on the theme "Health Equity, Gender and Human Rights"

The Greater Accra Region currently has the lowest prevalence of malaria in the country, Dr Abena Okoh, a malaria focal person for the Greater Accra Region with the Ghana Health Service (GHS) has said.

Her comment comes as Ghana joins the rest of the world to celebrate this year’s World Malaria Day on the theme “Health Equity, Gender and Human Rights”.

This year’s theme seeks to raise awareness of the fight against malaria for those most affected by the disease, such as pregnant women and children.

Speaking to Kwaku Nhyira-Addo on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Thursday (25 April), Okoh advised the public to test for malaria before acquiring medicine for treatment.

“The interesting thing is that in Greater Accra for instance, we have the lowest prevalence of malaria in the entire country because some of the interventions that we are rolling out are working, case management is working, the provision of mosquito net that we are giving have all contributed to reducing malaria,” she said.

“So a lot of the fever that we think are malaria really isn’t malaria. So, that is why we are promoting the Test, Treat and Track (3T). So we don’t want people to just walk into the pharmacy and buy malaria medicine,” Okoh added.
