Ghana’s futsal dream ends in heavy defeat at AFCON

Philip Boakye's men were thrashed 11-3 by 2020 bronze medalists Angola in their final Group A match at the Salle Ibn Yassine in Rabat, Morocco

Ghana’s national futsal team’s journey at the 2024 Futsal Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) came to a crashing end on Monday (15 April), as they were thrashed 11-3 by 2020 bronze medalists Angola in their final Group A match at the Salle Ibn Yassine in Rabat, Morocco.

Ghana, only making their second appearance at the continental showpiece, was aiming to emulate their runners-up finish at the inaugural edition in 1996. However, the inexperienced squad found the competition fierce, failing to register a single point in Group A.

Their campaign began with a narrow 5-2 defeat to 2016’s fourth-placed team, Zambia. This was followed by an 8-3 loss to the defending champions and tournament hosts, Morocco.

Monday’s heavy defeat against Angola sealed their fate, with the experienced Angolans showcasing their quality.

Meanwhile, Morocco dominated Group A, topping the table with a maximum nine points. The North Africans secured their place in the semi-finals with a resounding 13-0 victory over Zambia in front of a packed Prince Moulay Abdellah Hall, also on Monday (15 April).

Angola, who finished second in the group with six points, will join Morocco in the knockout stages. The hosts now face a meeting with the runners-up of Group B in the semi-finals, scheduled for Friday (19 April) at 19:00 GMT.

Angola, on the other hand, will take on the Group B winners on the same day, with kick-off set for 16:00 GMT at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Hall.
