Ghana is ninth most successful host of the African Games

In terms of pure medal count, Ghana's 69 medals at the 13th African Games rank them as the sixth-best host nation

Team Ghana secured an impressive 69 medals at the recently concluded 13th African Games, held in in Accra from 4–23 March 2024.

This achievement positions them as the ninth most successful host nation in the history of the African Games.

While their medal haul is significant—encompassing ten disciplines including arm wrestling, athletics, and weightlifting—it represents 6.3% of the total 1,087 medals awarded during the continental competition.

Looking back, Ghana’s performance falls short of 2019 host Morocco, who secured 118 medals (10.6%) of the 1,110 available at the 12th African Games.

However, they outperformed 1995 hosts Zimbabwe, who managed only 4.8% (35 medals) of the 727 medals on offer.

The top spots for most successful hosting nations remain firmly held by Egypt (1991, 27.9%), Nigeria (2003, 22.6%), and South Africa (1999, 21%). Notably, all three nations achieved the feat of winning the most medals and topping the medal table while hosting the Games.

Since Nigeria’s 2003 triumph, no host has replicated this accomplishment. Algeria (2007) came closest, securing 16.3% (205 medals) and finishing second overall.

Mozambique (2011) stands as the least successful host, garnering only 1.2% (12 medals) and finishing 25th. The inaugural hosts, the Republic of Congo (1965), hold the record for the lowest medal count by a host (5 medals, 2.7%). They would perform slightly better than the second time they hosted the Games in 2015, finishing in 11th place (31 medals, 3%).

In terms of pure medal count, Ghana ranks as the sixth best host nation, trailing Morocco 2019 (118), South Africa 1999 (184), Egypt 1991 (195), Algeria 2007 (205), and Nigeria 2003 (240).

Ghana’s performance at the 13th African Games deserves recognition. While they may not have topped the medal table, their achievement showcases significant progress and sets a strong foundation for future Games.
