Ghana Athletics denies relay team self-funded World Relays trip

The Ghanaian quartet- Ibrahim Fuseini, Isaac Botsio, Benjamin Azamati, and Joseph Paul Amoah—clocked a season-best 38.29 seconds at the World Relays, securing their place at the upcoming Paris Olympics

Ghana Athletics (GA) has refuted claims that the nation’s men’s 4x100m relay team self-funded their participation in the 2024 World Relays in Nassau, Bahamas (4–5 May).

The Ghanaian quartet—Ibrahim Fuseini, Isaac Botsio, Benjamin Azamati, and Joseph Paul Amoah—clocked a season-best 38.29 seconds at the World Relays, securing their place at the upcoming Paris Olympics. However, recent media reports suggest the athletes financed their own trip to the Bahamas.

GA has moved swiftly to dispel this notion, clarifying that the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MoYS) not only covered the team’s World Relays expenses but also their preparatory participation at the 2024 Penn Relays in the United States.

A statement from GA addressed the social media speculation: “GA emphasises that neither athletes nor officials self-financed their representation of Ghana at the Penn Relays and World Relays. In preparation for the 2024 World Relays, MoYS financed the relay team’s participation in the 2024 Penn Relays in the United States of America and further facilitated funding for their critical journey to the 2024 World Relays.”
