The Chief Imam, Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, has donated GHC70,000 to support people displaced by the spillage of excess water in the Akosombo and Kpong Dams.
At least 31,000 individuals in nine districts have been displaced by the spillage, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has said.
Crops have been destroyed, schools have shut and the economy has come to a standstill in Mepe – the centre of the flooded area in the Volta Region – as well as parts of the Eastern and Greater Accra Regions after the dams at Akosombo and Kpong overflowed.
The Chief Imam, who made a personal visit to the area, also presented the victims with a lorryload of relief items.
He then led special prayers for all the displaced, including senior citizens, mothers, children and other vulnerable people in the 21 camps.
Meanwhile, the Overlord of the Dagbon Kingdom, Ndan Ya Naa Abukari II, has also presented a truck load of relief items to the victims.
The MP for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, commended the Chief Imam and the Ya Naa for their outstanding humanitarian gesture.
He says the move not only confirms their widely acclaimed reputation for philanthropy but also highlights their unflinching unity and support to humanity.
