African Games facilities will serve as nucleus for University of Sports Development, says Akufo-Addo

Ghana hosted the multi-sport event for the first time with nine venues including a US$145 million Borteyman sports complex

President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo says the facilities which hosted the 13th edition of the African Games in Accra will “serve as a nucleus for the soon-to-be-established University of Sports Development” as he expressed his delight that despite challenges, Ghana was able to provide world-class sporting facilities.

Ghana hosted the multi-sport event for the first time with nine venues including a US$145 million Borteyman sports complex.

The 11,000-capacity University of Ghana Stadium was also completed with a newly constructed Rubgy Field at the University of Ghana.

The Minister for Youth and Sports Mustapha Yussif announced before the African Games 2023 that the facilities will be converted into a University of Sports for Development after the event.

This, according to the Sports Ministry, is to ensure that the facilities at the Borteyman Sports Complex are well maintained for the continuous benefit of the country.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the African Games on Saturday (23 March), President Akufo-Addo assured the public that the facilities would be maintained and serve as venues for training future champions

“I am particularly delighted that despite all the challenges that confronted us, Ghana was able to provide world class sporting facilities for the game,” he said.

“These facilities will be well maintained and will serve as appropriate venues for training future champions and for hosting international sporting events and competitions.”

“Indeed, the facilities will act as the nucleus for the soon-to-be-established university of sports for development and will also be the venues for the holding of the Ghana National Games, thus the annual national sports festival where winners from the district and regional levels will meet to compete for the top national honours.”
