Abubakar Yakubu Lea makes history at Shawnee State University

The Ghanaian tennis sensation currently sits at an impressive 68th place in the ITA-NAIA ranking in his freshman year at Shawnee State University

Ghanaian tennis player Abubakar Yakubu Lea has cemented his place in Shawnee State University’s sporting history by becoming the institution’s first-ever men’s tennis player to be ranked nationally by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association-National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (ITA-NAIA).

Yakubu Lea currently sits at an impressive 68th position in the national rankings, edging out Spaniard Gonzaga Lafarga (69th) but falling just short of fellow Spaniard Borja Delgado (67th), according to the latest ITA rankings released on 2 May, 2024.

This remarkable achievement comes on the back of a stellar 2024 season for Yakubu Lea, who boasts an 11-6 win-loss record in official matches, with an additional exhibition victory to his name.

Lea’s talents were further recognised with the River States Conference Newcomer of the Year award.

Throughout the season, Lea has consistently impressed, defeating the likes of Jose Andres Perez Perez, the River States Conference’s Player of the Year, who is currently ranked 36th nationally.

He also secured a notable win against NCAA Division I talent Carlos Rodriguez Gonzalez, Lindenwood University’s No. 1 singles player.
